'NEW' FREE Footage From October 1969

Well, FAS reader Alessando Borri has done it again! In his bloodhound search to find missing concert dates and information about our favourite band he's actually turned up some completely unknown footage! On October 9, 1969 Free played in Essen at the 'Pop & Blues Festival' with lots of other bands. A full audio recording of the Free set has been around for a while but it appears some of the show was filmed too and below you'll find a link that takes you to the WDR (German TV) website that has posted TV coverage from the show.

The Free footage is in the second section which has the header;
'Hier und Heute' vom 14. Oktober 1969 | Rockpalast | 28.03.2016 | 09:52 Min. | WDR
below it. Free appears from 00.00.45 through 00.01.06 directly after The Nice. Despite the dialogue overlay it appears the footage also has VERY good sound underneath. Is there any more.... who knows, but its fantastic to see Kossoff nailing that Hunter ending and check out Fraser breaking a string!!

There's also snipets of Colosseum, Spooky Tooth, Deep Purple (Ian Paice), Fleetwood Mac (w/Green) and others. Fabulous stuff. Its just a shame its not longer!!

Kossoff : The Band Plays On - Leicester. November 3rd, 2017

So, you didn't make the 'Band Plays On' show at The Musician in Leicester on Friday (November 3rd). I did mention it here on October 27th. Its a shame you weren't there.

On Thursday evening both Simon Kossoff and JP James arrived at Castle FAS to sign the Ltd. Edition books (70). We settled in and had that all sorted out by Friday afternoon, had a visit from Steve Clarke (who recently did all the guitar tech reviews of Kossoff's Les Paul's) and then made our way over to support John, Terry and the band. Awful traffic but wholly worthwhile.

Had you been there you could have had a chat with J.P. James, author of  'Paul Kossoff: All Right Now. The Guitars, The Gear, The Music'. You could have had a chat with myself or Simon Kossoff, Paul's brother. And you could have seen a really great couple of sets from the band that featured 'Blue Soul', 'Raging River', 'Leaves In The Wind' and 'Molten Gold' among others. Terry Slesser was on great form and John Buckton wailed away. Furthermore you missed the chance to see Paul's original Isle Of Wight stripped '59 Les Paul. Yup the very one he used at the Beat Club and on TOTP's. NOT a copy. The owner kindly lent it to us for John to play during the evening and it sounded MAGNIFICENT!! It was enjoyed for the whole show but for two songs, when John broke a string just before the end of the first set. Fantastic to see and hear it in such capable hands.

Those who were there... great night wasn't it. We drank beer, we listened to great 'live' music, we took lots of photographs and we talked a lot after the show. I had a grand time. Thanks to all who came to the gig said 'hello'.

Paul Kossoff - Warren Haynes - JP James

Got Mule?

You should have. The new album 'Revolution Come... Revolution Go' is the best for a while and highly recommended by the FAS. Get the deluxe 2CD or HiRes 88k/24bit version from HDTracks for maximum Mule.

Still out on tour and following the great 'Revolution Is Free' Halloween show in Amsterdam (see below) Mule played 'I'll Be Creepin' again in Hamburg on November 2nd. Hopefully FREE songs will be popping up on the setlist in the future. Will they play some FREE stuff in the UK? Well only time will tell I guess but it would be a shame if they didn't !

In the meantime what does a young Mule do when he has some 'spare' time. Well Warren Haynes is a serious music head. Talking to him you soon realise he knows his stuff and his knowledge is as deep as it is wide. So in his case he reads his copy of the J.P. James book 'Paul Kossoff: All Right Now. The Guitars, The Gear, The Music' of course!!

Do you have yours yet?

ALL RIGHT NOW goes Sci-Fi on UK Channel 4

Yes it does sound a little strange but if you have been watching the 'Electric Dreams' series on Channel 4 (Sundays 9pm) then last night was a bit of a treat. During the episode, called  'Real Life', you were indulged with 'All Right Now' being featured not once, but twice!  The song plays in the background of two separate diner scenes and may seem an odd choice but with its instantly recognisable 'hook' in the chorus its useful to the plot as the main character struggles to work out which of the two lives they seem to be living is actually real, and which is computer generated. The shows have been a little hit and miss in both production values and stories but this was one of the better instalments so far.

The plot is thinly based on a story called 'Exhibit Piece' by Philip K. Dick, famous of course for 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep' on which the 'Bladerunner' movie was loosely based. It deals with (and not giving too much away here) someone who is offered the chance of a 'holiday' into another life via a prototype computer reality. The dilemma is that in the end they can't work out which of the two is 'Real Life'. The show reminded me somewhat of the film 'The Thirteenth Floor', which deals with similar themes. The episode will be broadcast again this coming Friday (20th October) at 3am and is worth recording for investigation at your leisure.

It is also available via Channel 4's 'On Demand' service.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL KOSSOFF

My, these anniversaries come around so quickly these days. I really don't want to become a register of births, deaths and marriages but its a little different in the case of Paul Kossoff. Not least because he didn't have as many birthdays as he should have, but also because he's the reason I started the magazine in the first place. There are many great guitar players out there, past and present,
but Paul Kossoff is still my favourite.

Free - 'Mr. Big' at the movies...

As promised in FAS #140 here is the trailer from the 2015 film 'Demolition', starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. This is not available on DVD in the UK at the present time. 'Mr. Big' is actually featured in the movie more than once. On this trailer it kicks in at around 45 seconds and it sounds AMAZING! There are shorter trailers but I believe this one gives a bit more of the feel of the film rather than just Gyllenhaal grooving away.

Reviews have been very mixed and while some critics have panned it (Tim Robey -  The Telegraph April 29, 2016 / Wendy Ide -  The Guardian May 1, 2016)) paying punters have been much kinder and it generally gets a 7/10. I particularly liked what Simon Hall commented under the later critique on-line;
'Ignore this bobbins review. Brilliant performance from Jake Gyllenhall. It's not imperative for a film to be complex / complicated. This paints a viscera picture of what it feels inside when someone's gone. And it's very funny....'

Synopsis:
Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father-in-law, Phil (Chris Cooper), to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis' letters catch the attention of customer service rep, Karen (Naomi Watts), and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.

Press Release below.

Affectionately known as 'Koss', Paul Kossoff's playing touched people. It still does today, more than forty years after his sad and untimely death at the age of twenty-five. This authorised biography pays fitting tribute to a much-loved and widely admired musician whose influence and inspiration is still very evident. It's all here: Kossoff's musical childhood, his formative years with Black Cat Bones, forming Free at seventeen, that group's dizzying success, breakup, reforming and dissolution, the solo years, Back Street Crawler - the sessions, the tours and big concerts, the triumphs, the tragedies and the heartbreak - J.P. James takes the reader right there. Over four distinct sections, Kossoff's many guitars and the equipment he used to make them sing are fully documented; a brand-new detailed analysis of Kossoff's distinctive playing style and technique is presented for the first time; a broad overview of Kossoff's creative life draws on the voices of family, friends and fellow musicians; and finally, Kossoff's musical influences, approach to playing and his wider musical interests, hopes and dreams are explored - all drawn from his own words. Cramming so much into his short years, Paul Kossoff left a rich musical legacy, and he is indeed All Right Now. Thoroughly researched and sensitively written, given often in Kossoff's own words and packed with anecdotes from those who were there, musicians and fans alike will enjoy this authoritative and comprehensive biography.

Jiimy Copley RIP

Geoff, Jimmy & Jaz... Good times...

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart I have to report the death of my friend Jimmy Copley, who lost his battle with leukaemia last night. He was 63. Jimmy played with Paul Rodgers in what was undeniably Paul's best solo band, also featuring Geoff Whitehorn and Jaz Lochrie. Indeed Jimmy was in fact the first member of that superb line-up (sort of) and actually first played with Paul on his Johnny Walker BBC session in October 1993 where the band also featured Pino Palladino and Brian Adams (yes THAT Brian Adams!)

Jimmy played with Paul, Geoff and Jaz from 1995 until the band was dissolved when Paul Rodgers moved to Canada. He appears on 'Now', 'Live At Loreley' and 'Electric' and throughout 1996 and 1997 I saw that band perform some amazing shows. Awesome stuff.

Jimmy was a fantastic drummer, with excellent 'chops' and exceptional snare and hi-hat skills. He was always friendly, approachable, enthusiastic and a huge Free fan. His career was as wide musically as it was long in years and there wasn't anyone he couldn't play with. He was fantastic with Tears For Fears, Go West and Upp but my own favourite things are the 'Stand' album by Char and 'Toothpick's Pillow' by Dogwood. I had the privilege to see him perform with both. He also played with Manfred Mann, Magnum, Moody Marsden Band, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and many many more.

In 2008 Jimmy finally released his own solo album which was reviewed in the FAS at the time and was a real who's who of players and showcased not only Jimmy's skills but also his influences. If you don't have it, check it out. The Dogwood and Char albums will be more difficult to find but are both things I'd hate to be without.

I hung out with Geoff, Jimmy and Jaz during two or three full UK tours (every show) and the Ronnie Scott's Residency in 1997. I can honestly say they were some of the best days of my life and those three guys were an absolute hoot to be around. I was very lucky.

Jimmy, I'm so proud to have been able to call you my friend and to have had the time with you. I'll miss you so much and the FAS sends its sincere condolences to Jimmy's family.

Paul Kossoff / Isle Of Wight Les Paul Std

Paul Kossoff IOW Les Paul Feature

Long article on Paul Kossoff's Isle Of Wight 1970 stripped Les Paul in the latest edition of 'Guitar & Bass' this month
(May 2017 Vol 28 No.08)
Price £4.99.

Written by our old friend Steve Clarke this is the closest look ever at the most elusive of Paul's guitars. Steve goes into every detail and provides some interesting facts while also dispelling a few fictions. Lots of photographs of the guitar and an in depth text for the fan and collector alike. Possibly the closest you'll ever get to this particular instrument. This is the guitar Paul used at the Isle Of Wight Festival, on 'Top Of The Pops' and on the 'Beat Club' performances. Its also the mostly likely contender for being THE 'All Right Now' guitar.

Thanks to Steve and 'Guitar And Bass' magazine for letting me include a link to the feature below. Check it out!!

PAUL KOSSOFF.. We miss you Paul

We Miss You Paul...
Paul Kossoff
September 14th 1950 - March 19th 1976
Another sad anniversary... So lets go somewhere different. Yes, play some Paul Kossoff music -  and play it LOUDLY. 'Tuesday Morning' on a Sunday... why the hell not! But here's something very 'left field' I think you might like to hear about.

In cyberspace Paul Kossoff Lives!

'Elite' goes WAY back where home computers are concerned and was originally released by developers David Braben and Ian Bell by Acornsoft for the BBC Mirco and Acorn Electron computers in September 1984. It used 3D wire graphics and was basically a combat and trading game but with massive gameplay options. You could be a miner, a trader, bounty hunter or even a pirate and it took the idea of the old role playing text games to a whole new level. I first became aware of it on the Commadore 64 and then the Amiga but truthfully I found it WAY to complex and really, I didn't get very far. Yup, it sure was geeky and some people really got lost in it's immense playing world and gameplay.
Over the years there were various versions released but in 2012 a 'Kickstarter' campaign for funding from players themselves provided developers the opportunity to really bring the game into the 21st century with ludicrously VAST playing area based factually on the stars and planets within the Milky Way. Players can explore anywhere they like in what is a completely real time experience while interacting with others programmed into the game or on the multi-player platform aided greatly by faster broadband speeds via Fibre. Wikipedia explains better than me that;
The player is able to explore the game's galaxy of some 400 billion star systems, complete with planets and moons that rotate and orbit in real-time, resulting in dynamic day/night cycles. Around 150,000 of the game's star systems are taken from real-world astronomical data, while the remainder are procedurally generated according to scientific models. Throughout the galaxy, the player is able to dock with space stations and outposts to trade goods, purchase new spacecraft, re-arm their ship, effect repairs and to seek or complete missions from text-based station "bulletin boards". The player may also find cargo or encounter other ships while in flight by investigating 'Unidentified Signal Sources'.
Scanning to see who's aboard AND... Its Koss!

So yeah, its pretty deep. People who gave money to the project were offered different 'incentives' to donate. One of them was the option to NAME an in-game player, and that's where Angus Manwaring; an Elite player and a huge Paul Kossoff fan, decided the choice was obvious. Why not have Paul Kossoff flying around the Elite universe for eternity, doing his own thing, and allowing anyone with the audacity to go out there and find him. It works for me -  and so on this, the sad 41st anniversary of Paul's death we are pleased to announce he's been spotted by Angus - who has been looking for him for a couple of years - and he's doing fine. He appears randomly in the game so just finding him in the HUGE Elite universe is an accomplishment all in itself. Over to Angus...

In Space, There's one great bluesman...
Life had been pretty good, I’d made a fortune running missions and bounty-hunting – to the point where I’d finally achieved a lifelong ambition, I could finally afford a Federal Corvette, a very serious combat ship, not a dogfighter (but not far off one in the handling stakes) but a ship powerful and heavily enough armed to take down the fearsome Anacondas and Cutters, and an accompanying wing of dogfighters if need be. Yeah, she was something all right, but what I hadn’t fully appreciated was so was the money I’d need to fit her up properly. Make her tough enough to defend herself and not become a token kill for some hotshot Vulture pilot. Well, I got that pretty much done, but that left me broke again, I needed her to earn her keep. I needed some quick, good paying jobs to replenish what I’d spent, to give me some security. In short, putting some money back under the mattress.
With this in mind I accepted a lucrative bounty job, down in the Rahu system. It seemed an Alliance convoy had been shot up by local outlaws, and the efforts to rescue the survivors needed some additional security. It looked pretty standard, most of the activity took place off the Rings of Rahu 1, and I spent several days flying patrols and racking up a bounty tally on a fairly unimaginative enemy. It would have been the 4th or 5th day of the operation that it happened.

Now you should know, I’m a Bluesman – not the stuff they churn out these days, I mean back in the 20th and 21st century, the real stuff, when it wasn’t a career option – they did it because they had to. A guy from back then, a Paul Kossoff, he could play guitar so pretty it would make a grown man weep, or smile, or just stand there and feel it, well, that day I ran into a ship drawing fire from every direction. There must have been four or five guys gunning for him. He wasn’t calling for help, he was just fighting them off, casual, methodical like. Methodical or not, there was no way he could win, not with those odds, then I saw the name on my scanner display- Paul Kossoff. So I pitched in – now truth be told, I’m no great fighter pilot, but I had the ship, and I had the firepower – and together we took down all those ships. When it was over we just flew along side by side for maybe a minute or two, he didn’t answer my hails, never said a word, then he just rolled out, and 'high waked' out of there – it was the damnedest thing.

Elite
If you had any involvement with the “home micro” game scene in the early/mid eighties, it would have been hard to avoid the legend that was (and is) Elite. Cambridge university students David Braben and Colin Bell came up with a unique game that was at once a shoot-em-up, a role-playing-game, and an adventure. It blurred the lines of established genres, and it did it in first person perspective 3D! The player was presented with a capable but poorly equipped spaceship, the Cobra Mk III, and could choose his own method of progression: Trader, Bounty Hunter, Pirate, Miner or any combination. There was no score, no ‘three lives’ it was just you, your ship, the eight galaxies, and whatever path you decided to take. David Braben (now OBE) made a couple of sequels in the nineties but since then let the game be, to await better technology to further develop it.
Well, that time came a couple of years back with the release of Elite: Dangerous. Now a multiplayer, online game, taking place in a 1:1 scale simulation of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Every star you can see in the night sky is there in the game, mapped as accurately as the current data allows. Beyond that, the developers have had to create star systems using procedural generation software - what they call the Galactic Forge, which works from first principles to place and populate stars, 400, 000, million of them, as realistically as they can. This goes down to the type of minerals and gases most likely to exist on the orbiting planets. And it seems they’re doing something right because when NASA recently announced 7 Earth-like worlds in the Trappist 1 system, that’s just how Elite Dangerous had already rendered the system at that location.
Over the intervening years between the sequels and the present, David Braben quietly had his company, Frontier Developments,  working on possible development tools for the sequel. At one point, Elite IV was announced, but this proved premature and was not released. Work did continue on the Cobra engine however, and over the years , in the background things steadily began to take shape.
In 2012 it was decided the new game would be crowd-funded, and by the end of the funding period, the game was confirmed as were a host of stretch goals which included additional ships, and a Mac version. Backers received various perks, depending on their generosity and these included the right to name a non-player character who would appear randomly within the game. Who would you have chosen? I chose Paul Kossoff. In December 2014, the game, having passed through its alpha and beta phases was released to its backers, and shortly after, to the world in general.
Since its release, a host of updates have been added, including Planetary Landings, Wings, Engineers, and as I type the Commaders update (allowing multi-crewing of a single ship) is undergoing its beta period. The future of the game, its players, and its non-player characters, looks good.

ANDY FRASER - Two years Gone...

Andy Fraser
July 3rd 1952 - March 16th 2015

Don't forget to play some stuff by Andy today. Give it some volume with 'Mr Big' live and remind yourself of how awesome that bass playing is. Check out 'Mouthful Of Grass' and admire his acoustic picking talents. Then how about that CBS 'Andy Fraser Band' album from 1975 showing him as a writer, bassist and singer. All well worth your attention, especially today. And that's just scratching the surface.

Andy and Simon Kirke often get overlooked when Paul Kossoff and Paul Rodgers were so much the 'face' of Free, but make no mistake that band wouldn't have been the same without them. Fraser's bass playing was central to the whole 'swing' and 'groove' that Free had, especially around the time of 1969's eponymous album. 'Songs Of Yesterday', 'Trouble On Double Time' and 'I'll Be Creepin' all feature stunning bass work where the whole arrangement of the song hinges on what the bass and drums are doing. Never underestimate the power of a great rhythm section.

Andy left a great legacy. Sail on brother...
