FAS #169 'Addendums'

Free Appreciation Society

Issue #169 (August 2023)

Audio/video addendums

Hopefully you are enjoying issue #169. There's always something in each issue to drive me mad, and in this one, having moved around some pages at the last minute, the page numbers for these 'extras' in the introduction to the issue is out, by one page! Annoying, but too late to fix it now. Anyway, below is the material that can't be included in the magazine, as promised. This is the audio/video 'bit' of content that applies to this current issue of the Free Appreciation Society magazine, at the point of the history we are dealing with. For further details, refer to the relevant pages in the issue. Free Appreciation Society Magazine - Issue #169

Free Appreciation Society

Magazine Issue #169

August 2023 Issue

Okay, #169 has just gone into the mail, with an extra four pages. Absolutely no point in keeping them here, when they are packed and ready to go. I hadn't really anticipated the additional page count, but the photographs looked so good, I wanted to make them full page, instead of two images on one page. In this case bigger is definitely better!

So, #169 is the third of five magazines dealing with the reformation of the group in 1972, after they'd officially split in May 1971, and all done some solo stuff. In this issue the group round up the recording of 'Free At Last' with the final song, and compile the master tapes, so the album is ready to press. Then Free fly to America for what was to be a pretty disastrous tour. Kossoff missed shows due to 'illness', one of the roadies dies in the back of the equipment van between shows, and they limp home after a couple of months to pretty much break up again.

This issue covers all those final performances with Andy Fraser (where audio is available), as he wasn't to continue with the group any further. They came home, and he'd had enough (but that's for #170). Shows with West, Bruce & Laing, Faces, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Stevie Wonder and Edgar Winter are all documented here, along with some fantastic photographs, many full page. Posters, tickets, tour adverts, and press from the period are all included. This magazine is PACKED! I think it may actually be one of the best issues we've ever done.

Also covered is the release for 'Little Bit Of Love' in May, the Paul Rodgers reggae single ('I Just Want To See You Smile'), and this instalment takes us up to the liberation of the new LP, 'Free At Last', which went out into the shops in June 1972. So, 51 years ago! Jeez!

56 pages here, many in colour. Lots of new information, photographs and clippings, and many things never used, or documented, in the FAS before. I hope you enjoy it.

The addendums (Pages 40, 41 & 48) will be up here in a few days, giving everyone a chance to find out about them in the magazine.

FAS #169 'Sneaky Peak'

The August issue of the FAS went to print today, and so should be out on time. Getting one finished every month is hetic... but so far, so good!

We've already moved onto the next one, and have started the job of re-paging and corrections. And there are always tweaks needed!!

Sneaky peak of a few pages from #169 on the right. Some amazing photographs from the April/May 1972 tour, and lots of new press, with adverts, posters and reviews.

Hopefully I can get the overseas post out early next week, and then the UK ones around July 31st.  Perfect!
