Free Appreciation Society Magazine - Issue #168

Free Appreciation Society

Magazine Issue #168

July 2023 Issue

Just back from the post office... again... Yes, It's ready to go, so why not get it out straight away, so I can move on to the next one. You never know when things will slow down for some reason. It's nice to be a little bit ahead currently. As I'm now a little more familiar with what I have to do to reset these page-wise, and it's still a pain but I'm a little bit faster, things come together a little better. Given that, I actually do believe #168 looks a bit better than #167. So it's all good! I do also know that the last two in this batch will be tough to re-page due to all the images!

So, #168 is the second of five issues dealing with the reformation of the group in 1972, after they'd split in May 1971. Here we have the conclusion of the February 1972 UK tour, another grasp at the 'Sail On' super-group session, this time from Corky Laing, and Free head into the studio for the formative work on 'Free At Last' to begin. This issue has a large amount of information on the tapes from those sessions, in an almost day-to-day-format. All the information I have on these recordings is here. Lots of great articles, and reviews from the period. Fabulous photographs, including a centre-page poster reproduction of Paul Rodgers that was in 'Disc' magazine (from the Royal Albert Hall show February 10th, 1972), along with a few others from that show that were excluded (due to space restrictions and re-setting) in #167.

We also follow the group on a short series of shows in Finland and Sweden during March. These shows break up the 'FAL' recordings. At this point I'm VERY pleased to have some brand new photographs never used in the FAS before, from the original Finnish photographer. These really are great new shots. That includes one of Andy on the back page where the bass looks ridiculously large on him! The magazine closes with an A&M Records press release, as over in the USA they prepare for a long tour by the group, and the new album.

52 pages, many in colour, with original press articles from the period, posters, tickets, and studio recording reel labels from the actual tape boxes. Lots of new information, and many things never used in the FAS before. I hope you enjoy it.

The addendum (P11) will be up here in a few days, giving everyone a chance to find out about it in the magazine. This one is really just a bit of fun with Simon & Andy in the studio.

Mailed out to all FAS subscribers in the UK TODAY.

Paul Rodgers - 'Living it Up' 2023

New Paul Rodgers song also now up on YouTube.
Album and order details are in the post below.

Paul Rodgers - New Album 2023 'Midnight Rose'

Seems we have a new album from Paul Rodgers in the way. Release date is September 22nd, 2023. This comes via Sun Records, and will be available on both CD ($13.98) and Vinyl ($31.95). Currently you can pre-order on the Sun website, link below. I don't have UK prices but I'm sure it'll be up for pre-order in the usual places soon. I've no idea who is playing on this. He has been seen with Billy Duffy and Matt Sorum recently, but it's nice to see Paul has been working with a decent producer, Bob Rock. Mostly known for his work with Metallica, he has also worked with Aerosmith, The Tragically Hip, David Lee Roth, Bon Jovi... and erm... Michael Bublé, among others.

Sun Records Press/Web blurb...

Legendary rock and roll vocalist Paul Rodgers is ready to rock with a new album of original music. Midnight Rose, his first solo studio release in nearly a decade, arrives September 22 on Sun Records. A celebration of a storied career and a feel-good, hopeful look towards the future, Midnight Rose features Paul’s quintessential larger-than-life vocals in a whole new chapter of his career. Named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, Rodgers powers through all original, new tracks like “Living It Up,” “Take Love,” and “Photo Shooter.”

FAS #168 - Sneak Peak

Yes, I'm already packing these, and in fact the copies going out to Australia, Japan, and America are already in the mail. I'll post Europe tomorrow, and all the UK issues on Monday morning (so they don't sit in some postal van or sack over the weekend getting creased). I could wait until 'Tuesday Morning', just for the obvious pun, but they are done, and they will be on their way out as soon as they are packed. The sooner they go, the faster I can move on to the next issue. Anyway, here's a sneak peak, and if you look carefully you'll see a 'work in progress' #169 up on my computer behind the magazine being shown. Sorry about the rubbish camera work (and angle), but holding it, turning it on, and then flipping through the magazine requires four arms and two pairs of hands. It's as good as it gets for a taster on a Wednesday!
