A small piece of GOOD news.

Finally it's here!!

The boxes containing the newly printed,  folded,  stapled  and cropped  FAS  #161  arrived yesterday and I've been slowly, carefully,  packing  them  up.

Overseas issues went out yesterday and today, so they are on the way to everyone. UK issues will go out on Monday and Tuesday. No point posting any tomorrow, they'll just be slung somewhere in a mailbag over the weekend. Anyway all the subscriber issues will be out within the next four or five days.

You should have them, if you reside in the UK, by the end of next week. Or at least, I'll have done my bit. I can't speak for the actual speed of the postal service. Once the last magazines have gone into the mail I'll put the full issue details up.

These are taking a little longer to pack as there are three items going into each envelope. There's the bumper sized 80 page issue. A copy of the full Fillmore East programme for the cancelled American shows in May 1971, and also a full colour A3 reproduction of the press ad for the February 1971 UK tour. Sweeeeet !!

FAS #161, #162, #163

Okay, a quick update as I know some of you are chomping at the bit currently for the next magazine. These next three issues are just about done. There has been a delay as I had to fully re-page #161 having expanded it a little bit, now 80 pages (!!), and also some additional material arrived for #163 - so that also needed a rewrite, then some work re-finishing, as the pages got knocked out of size. New proofs should be done next week for a final check, as last time there were also a couple of pages out of order in #161 after I'd reset everything. Oops! All this kind of stuff takes time, hence the delay. Sorry about that, but the magazines are better for the changes.

Anyway this setback has pushed us back a little bit, so now #161 will come out in early March, with #162 (Cover 'outtake' shown!) following in April, and then #163 in May. Basically they will go out about four weeks apart. Don't expect #164 until MUCH later in the year. I've started rounding up all the material and notes for it, but haven't written anything yet. I find it hard to move forward and concentrate on the new stuff until what we have ready is sent out and the decks here are cleared, so to speak. I need to put 'Free Live!' away before I move to 'KKTR'.

#161 looks pretty FAB actually, so just a few more weeks to wait while we tweak it. I'll put information up here as soon as they start to go out to subscribers. Mailing will be spread over a few days as I have to mess around with adding stamps to 'up' the postage coverage to £1.53 (UK) as it's a big issue. Some of you will have a wide array of 'stampage' denominations on the envelopes, as you will see! It made me laugh, when I saw them all with multiple stamps, but it was a pain in the ass to do when the PO here ran out of 20p's and I had to default to 10p's. I'm very glad I didn't have to lick them all! Anyway, be patient. It's getting there. Just a little bit longer and all will be revealed.

Also, I should mention that a couple of people sent very nice Christmas presents, for which I'm very grateful. If you sent something, and I haven't thanked you I can only apologise. However, I should point out that two items had no indication as to who they are from. No address, no card, no note, anything -  which has made thanking you somewhat difficult!

Keep safe, Sail On

David

Happy Christmas...!

So here it is 'Merry Christmas', as Slade let me know very loudly in Asda last week!

I hope everyone is safe and well. Work here continues on issues for next year, and what was two - is now three! No rest for the wicked and I'm working on covers today, before I start paging up, then corrections... and on it goes! I trust you all have a great day, and all best wishes for the coming 2022.

Free Appreciation Society Magazine - Issue #160

Free Appreciation Society

Magazine Issue #160

December 2021

Okay, the final issue of 2021 has gone out to UK subscribers today, and all overseas readers during past last couple of days.

Free Appreciation Society Magazine - Issue #160

This is the second instalment of our FAS 'My Brother Jake / Free Live!' quadrilogy! We now conclude the February UK tour, and then the group head into the studio to record and complete the mixing and selection of songs for the 'Free Live!' album... And of course they decide to break up. Lots going on here as the future of FREE grinds to a halt before they head over to Australia and Japan for the final shows (issue #161)

Lots to read here. Plenty of period press and interviews, and also a tape by tape breakdown of the final sessions that spawn both 'My Brother Jake' (including information of who it was actually about) and 'Get Where I Belong'. Also a few previous unpublished photographs from the period, along with information on the promotional film for 'Jake' and reviews.

This issue has no less than five addendums in the text, and these will go up onto the blog in a day or so. Then if you come here you can check them out as you read. Pretty cool, even if I say so myself -  so long as 'blogger' actually lets me put them up!

A hugely comprehensive issue. Enjoy!

56 pages absolutely packed with FREE!

'Now Spinning' Magazine - FREE's 'Highway' Album

Okay, with a brief gap between magazines (#160 starts going out in about 14 days) it's time for some more YouTube recommendations. I have to admit I've been watching a fair bit of stuff there, and have been enjoying content from 'Nat's What I Reckon', 'Critical Drinker' for fun, and the excellent 'Ghost Town Living' for something a bit deeper, as Brent explores and pretty much rebuilds the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo that he bought (yes, really), near Lone Pine in California. Well worth checking out and beautifully shot. The mine explorations are mind-blowing. These are my personal picks, they don't have to be yours.

Among those, and all the great space documentaries, are plenty of music 're-evaluate and review' channels. They vary in quality and content, but there's a fair bit of FREE stuff going up on a regular basis. Among those worth viewing is 'Now Spinning Magazine' with Phil Aston. Here you'll find plenty of mentions for Free and Paul Kossoff, as Phil is a big fan. So when the television only has the endless repeats of 'Parrot'... and 'Murder She Wrote.' Oh, I mean 'Poirot', sorry... or the awful remake of 'All Creatures Great & Small', with what has to be the most sickeningly smug looking cast anywhere on TV! Well just turn that shit off and have a look here.

Too much 'Escape To the Chateau', DIY or otherwise? Then check Phil out and go to his homepage to browse the other videos he's made, going back some seven years. His reviews are balanced and, more importantly, honest, and he BUYS the majority of the content he reviews. He's not a hack getting free copies of stuff, it's bought with his own pocket jingle. Good man. His review of the Black Sabbath 'Sabotage' piss take... I mean 'deluxe set' (Hahahaha!) pretty much echoes my own thoughts but without the foul language, and he's a content maker who actually reads and replies to comments made to him! Wow! What a concept! His video for 'Highway' is below and under that are some links to other videos on the 'Now Spinning Magazine' channel. You don't have to agree with everything Phil says, but I've found that generally he's pretty much on the ball, and certainly he seems to like most of the stuff I'd pick! Certainly well worth a look.
